A historic day in Mansfield, Texas saw the San Antonio Christian School swim teams win both the boys and girls TAPPS Division II State Championships. The dual team championships from Thursday capped off an undefeated season for the Lions.
The Lady Lions scored 331 points to lap the field by 110 points. Gold medal individual performances were turned in by Morgan Schield in the 100 butterfly and 100 backstroke, and Megan Troyer in the 200 freestyle. The SACS girls also won the 200 freestyle relay (Megan Troyer, Abigail Leal, Aubrie Hutson, Morgan Schield) and 400 freestyle relay (Grace Malin, Kylie Donofrio, Megan Troyer, Morgan Schield). The 200 medley relay finished third.
Senior Grayden Nelson led the boys team winning the 200 freestyle and the 500 freestyle individual gold medals. Nelson also anchored the Lions’ gold medal performances in the 200 medley relay (Michael O’Brien, Bryce Nichols, Christian Larsen, Grayden Nelson) and the 400 freestyle relay (Christian Larsen, Bryce Nichols, Michael O’Brien, Grayden Nelson). The boys 200 freestyle relay team placed fourth. The Lions scored 292 points to capture the boys team title by 30 points.
For senior Hannah Edenfield the sweep capped a four-year career that has seen the SACS girls team grow from just five swimmers as a freshman to 21 this season. When asked what her swimming experience at SACS has meant to her, Edenfield said, “It’s been a place where I am able to challenge first myself, and then others. The unique experiences have helped me to discover more about myself and how to encourage those around me.”
Both SACS teams are led by head coach Mark Saroni and assistant Colin Campbell.
